Some conjecture from the hometown Sopranos newspaper:
Fortunately, Tony finally returned to the land of the living -- fortunately for both the overwhelmed Sil and for viewers whose patience might have been fraying over the Kevin Finnerty scenes. Much as I fell in love with them last week, there was maybe an episode and a half's worth of mileage to be gotten from them. By the time Tony was asking the bartender if he might actually be Finnerty, the show was veering dangerously close to check-your-watch territory.
And to clarify, all David Chase told me was that they weren't dreams; the Purgatory stuff was just conjecture that will never be confirmed because he prefers to let the work speak for itself. Some readers contested the Purgatory theory, saying Tony couldn't get there until after he died, and that if you're bound for Hell, you don't stop in Purgatory along the way.
